so when i turned on my car this morning, i put it in reverse to back out of the spot. the tranny started to grind when trying to get it into reverse. thought it was a fluke, so i went to the mall and when backin out of the space it did it again....

so in the course of driving today, i would get stop at a light and just try reverse. sometimes it grinds, while other times it doesnt.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

oh and its a 2003 mach 1...only mods r exhaust. its got a tremec tr-3650.

Thanks in advance.

if the "problem" is like the one i have, you need engage a forward gear before trying to put it in reverse to prevent it from grinding. it's kind of random. some type of momentum in the trans keeps it moving so it grinds reverse.
one of my civics doesn't do it. (with two different transmissions)
my other civic grinds.
the mustang grinds.

if i start the car with clutch in then reverse doesn't grind, so it would seem it might have to do with the trans.

even tho this is the first time this has happened...i have had the car for almost a year now and maybe about 11k miles and it has never happened....my old 2V never did it either...

My Mach does it once in a while, but when going into first

change the fluid see if that helps.... if not, save for a rebuild

i heard its cheaper to buy one than rebuild it.

i ALWAYS put it in 4th before reverse, it prevents the noise...

I dont know what it costs to buy a new one... but when I had my t5 rebuilt in the white car it was better than ever.

Jose have you ever had the trans serviced? It might be a good idea to pick up some dex III and a gasket kit and service it

slightly OT, but is it ok to put mercon V instead of mercon/dextron into a T-45?

Just curious, but, gasket kit for what? Or you talking about a shifter gasket?  It's not an auto, right? Ionno but, in my GT I filled up the tranny fluid thru the shifter hole, never had any problems with it! :) But yeah, I'm gonna need some fresh tranny fluid to! Good luck Jose and I hope that's all your tranny needs!

Absolutely not!

Search for my threads on SVTPerf about this.

Mercon V is a synthetic and it's too slick to allow your synchros to slow for gear shifts. Result is gear grinding.

Stick to ONLY Dexron MERCON III and nothing else whatsoever.

This goes for all T45's, TR3650, T56 trannies.

Yeah, I would start there. Just seeing the color of the fluid and checking the pan and magnet for debris will tell you a lot of the story before you really should have to dig into the wallet.

Sorry about any confusion with the "gasket kit". The filter comes in the "gasket kit" which usually includes the pan gasket for many of the trans (even those that do not require one) and for some reason it is cheaper to buy it that way than just the gasket.

does it have to do with like a synchro issue? you have it in neutral, the input shaft is spinning, you push in the clutch, its still spinning, shove it into reverse, no synchro so it grinds.... putting it into first or any gear BEFORE reverse would slow/stop the input shaft.

no?

i always shove mine into gear first before going into reverse. otherwise i gotta fight it. gf's sisters 04 v6 is the same way...

that's weird Jose...mine doesn't do that

but then again I always shift to 4th or some other gear before going into reverse anyways...just a habit I picked up with my Prelude and I do it all the time

I'll try to shift straight to reverse when I go home for lunch and let you know if it happens or not...

but +1 on changing out the fluid on the tranny as soon as possible...I did it after my tranny kept locking me out of the 2-3 shift at the track when going full speed...I took it to DPR and they replaced the fluid with Dex III and it has worked perfectly ever since

yea i just assumed since reverse doesn't have a synchro, it would grind because of whatever momentum is left in the transmission after pushing in the clutch. odd that some cars do it and some cars don't.

my car would do that if the clutch cable was not adjusted perfectly, the clutch wasn't releasing enough for it to not grind, the quick solution was to hit 4th/5th then reverse, but the solution was getting the clutch cable adjusted correctly.

did you lift up on the clutch pedal until you heard it click Jose?

does it ever lock you out of a gear when ur going wide open throttle?

Jose, I thought you had your trans fluid change when you bought the car??

It might just needs to be topped off.

BTW, Eaton Fuller 13-speed > TKO600

Well its prolly over due. I need to do mine as well.

What you need if you want to do it yourself:

-oil catch pan/container for the used oil
-3qrts of ATF DEX III (you wont use all of it)
-Shifter gasket (unless you want to use silicone, but it can be messy)
- 1/4" & 3/8" drive ratchets and sockets
- jack and jackstands

Enorbit3

seems easy enough...im wonderin if i should just get an MGW and do it all at once....will prolly be easier.

Whatever you do DO NOT "top off" the fluid. Only what is specified. Just stick ur finger thru the filler hole and if u can feel fluid then ur done. U can do it thru the shifter but don't over do it. Get under the car when u are about done get under the car again and check. Its super easy thru the shifter but also super easy to end up "topping it off". Reason is the fluid needs room to circulate and cool off.

Good luck
