View Full Version : Having a headache over choosing head gaskets (and other things)

So I plan to remove my cylinder heads as well as intake manifold to get them painted as well as ported and polished...now a while back I posted something about stock rocker arm ratios and was disappointed that no one has responded to that thread. So I hope this question is a lot easier. I am just curious as to what gaskets I need to buy in order to accomplish the removal and replacement of the cylinder heads (I have heard that I need head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, as well as valve seat seals [what the heck are those])...are these the correct gaskets? Are there more gaskets that I need? Less? please let me know.
Many thanks

Running a rebuild 302 V8...ALL STOCK (except a pertronix ignitor kit under the distributor cap and a pertronix ignitor coil)

Your list of gaskets seems complete. If you plan on replacing your thermostat, you will also need a new waterneck gasket.

not planning on replacing the thermostat (at least I do not think so)...have a feeling that I will also buy a power steering pump gasket as well as a water pump gasket (have a feeling I will be repainting these parts as well)
Thanks for the help...now for the REALLY HARD QUESTION...where can I get these on the cheap (I do not want to spend over $40

I have found that you do NOT want to cheap out on gaskets or engine fasteners. If you do it right the first time, you only have to do it once. Autozone sells gasket sets from Fel-Pro that should contain everything you need.

Thanks...I usually use felpro when I do replace any gaskets...also am remembering that pre-1972 (at least I think it is pre-1972...all I know is that mine does not have them) mustangs did not come with exhaust manifold gaskets...so that should save me some money (and I have a feeling that the valve cover gaskets are in good shape since I only replaced them about 500 miles ago)

sounds like you need a top end gasket kit.. the 40 dollar thing sounds way off unless you mean per head gasket...if the car still has exhaust manifolds then it doesnt need gaskets for em..

what about rocker arm ratio's? if your pulling the heads for work, it would be a good time to convert them to studs, guide plates and standard valves.. someone did/does make roller tip rocker that would fit but best to convert to standard rocker arms and valves..
