View Full Version : Just thinking out loud here....(an Irwindale challenge)
I don't know if this would generate any/much interest, but I was thinking, what if we were to have an "all out challenge" area code vs. area code (626 vs. 310, 323 vs. 213, 818 vs. 951/909 etc.)? I would say city vs. city, but that might be a little too broad. This would be nothing but friendly (or rivalry :look: ) races where everyone has fun, no money involved, and perhaps someone that's really creative on photoshop could come up with a banner reading, "This year's area code challenge brawl winners are..." or something along those lines. The winners would be able to put that banner in their sig and hold that "honor" until the following challenge! I would just hope that people wouldn't get out of line and make up their own banners out of sore loserness, bitterness, or attention, etc.
Personally, if we could get a good crowd of cars participating in something like this, who knows, maybe it could lead to something bigger in the future!? But before we start thinking that far ahead, I figured I'd post this up to see if there's any interest, and if there is, we could all agree and set a certain date a month or two from now (which'll give everyone time to fix up or buy whatever they may need), and have ourselves a good old time! :)
Oh yeah, and before I forget, the races would be as "even" as possible. N/A vs. N/A, bolt ons vs. bolt ons, boost vs. boost, etc. Only acceptions I could see is if there's a "grudge/rivalry" match where, for example, someone with an N/A car wants to race someone squeezing nitrous or boost, etc. and visa-versa
So, what do you guys think? Would anyone be interested in participating in something like this? :gears: :)
Why don't we just unzip and see who can hit the floor? :whoknows:

just regular rivalries would be fine IMO. or pushrod vs. 2v vs. 3v vs. 4v etc.

Whatever! The more challenges the better! :) Whoever wants to race a certain race is all good with me! Just as long as both parties are game, and no one's gonna say "so and so cheated, he sprayed when he said he wasn't," "He's boosting 15lbs when he said he was only at 8lbs" etc...

Plus just as SOON as you set a date... the talk of "i'm gonna need to do this and this and this before I run" will start.
Then as the date gets closer the ones who never planned to follow thru on what they said they "needed" to do will start to flake.
And even worse yet, the ones who do actually start making the changes they talked about, won't be done with them in time.
Then there wont be more than 2-4 people racing, and chances are it'll be the same people who are known for going out there weekly anyway.

Yeah.....I had been planning on setting that up as part of the "rules." I think it would be best to keep it as a "where you currently live" sorta thing. Cause yeah, it wouldn't be fair if someone happens to live in a 714 area code, but has a 310 area code cell, but wants to race for the 626 area code team cause that's where he/she was born (or where their parents live), etc.

Hey Jaime, or any other mod, can a poll be added? I'd really hate to have to make another thread, but if I have to, it's fine. Anyway, what I would like to do is have a poll showing all the area codes that way we can see exactly how many people from each area code there are....and make it an open poll so we know exactly who voted for the specific area codes.

That's EXACTLY what I'm geared towards! I planned on posting up a thread to see how much interest there was, then move on from there. If there's enough interest and cars actually running, we can hit up Irwindale.....or Fontana, which ever is easiest....and have a private track day challenge! And who knows, maybe it can potentially build enough interest where sponsors might get involved, invite the usual car mags, etc. I know that a LOT of planning and things to do, but that's not the goal right now. Let's see how much interest we can generate, count heads and set a date. If it's a hit we can do it again sometime in the future etc.

Not too sure about that, it's something that needs to be looked into. That's something I'd like to see, but later on down the road. Personally, I think it would be premature to aim soo high without having a solid foundation to stand on. In other words, it'd be best to start small and grow from there. If this catches on by word of mouth, Internet, or by people seeing the "competition" at the track, then we'll know we have a concrete following that'll allow us to make this a huge private track day event that'll be successful and not a flop! Many times people get all hyped up, say they'll do this and that, etc., but when it comes down to it, they flake! So by starting off small, we can make adjustments, change things, add things, make certain rules, take out certain rules, etc., and basically "fine tune" the event so if/when this can get to that point we're striving for, we'll be ready for it! :)

the price per person would depend on how many people showed up.. i'll give irwindale a call in the next few days and see what it costs to rent the tack out... i think it would be a good idea though.. or even fontana... we start to get a big response, we can try to get a few shops to sponser us... dont think it would be a problem getting them.. ive made some good connections with a few shops.. Yeah dude, quit it already you're pissing me off!!! :look:  :D LoL
But seriously, I'm happy to hear that you're excited and willing to help me out! At first, I was thinking of along the lines of having a "sponsored track night" at Irwindale. I remember reading on their website that if a group or club had some sort of grudge match/rivaly with another group, they could "sponsor" that night's racing event. If memory serves me right, it was free, and basically all they would do is announce the grudge match event each time people participating in the event would go up to race. Just out of curiosity, how much does it cost to get the In-N-Out truck to go to an event?
Oh yeah, one other thing. I know someone mentioned something about having a club vs. club thing. It's another really good idea, but I wouldn't be able to pull that off. Main reason being, this isn't my website/"club." The only way we could officially pull that off would be thru Mark's permission and/or participation! Whether or not he'd be interested in doing something like right now or sometime in the future, I don't know, and that'd be something for him to chime in about if/when he's ready :)

Well that's why I feel, for the mean time, it's best to keep this as an area code challenge. If we were to get into club vs. club, or website vs. website, it'll get kinda "hairy" as to who's gonna race for who, etc. To avoid any confusion, hurt feelings (pertaining to as to who you chose to race for and the other two or three clubs "losing" you as a teammate, etc.), animosity, etc., area codes are as solid as can be.....at least it is in my eyes :)

true lots of flakers here, i say if we do set up a track day you take the $ in advanced and like that you know who is really gonna go..
And that is why it wont work....
In order to gather enough of a deposit for a facility to take the event seriously you need to appeal to the "hardcore" guys. And to put it simply there is not enough hardcore mustang guys among this crowd.
if there were, more of the people in this crowd would have been to Sal's last Mustang event a couple weeks ago.... if nothing else they would have been out there to at least watch.
There will be a few that will post some cash (which if you do it at Fontana, it'll cost over 7k, FYI. Which BTW is going to probably have to happen on a Friday, so scheduling will be an issue for most), you'll get a bunch that will sign up and disappear, and then you'll have those that will pay up and then want a refund for one reason or another. So then you'll have to open your audience to the LS1 guys, Viper guys, Diesel truck guys and then your whole idea is diluted.
So, if you dont have the cash to do this upfront and make it into a profit-intended venture, its gonna be a cluster fuck. Ask Greg about how it went on the first (and probably only) private event with the RET name attached....
Sorry for the novel... just had to throw my 2 cents in there.

So, if you dont have the cash to do this upfront and make it into a profit-intended venture, its gonna be a cluster fuck. Ask Greg about how it went on the first (and probably only) private event with the RET name attached....
Sorry for the novel... just had to throw my 2 cents in there.
That's exactly why I'd like to keep this on a waaay smaller venue! Keep it free (minus track entrance fee), and the people will come! Sure, we might only see about 15-20 cars, but it's a start! Then we can do it again some time in the future, and who knows, maybe we'll see 30 cars? I really don't want to jump into this with high expectations then just fall flat on my face. I hear ya and understand what you're saying!

well if you're going for small, try and get with the special events people at Irwindale and tell them what you're trying to do.... they should be able to set it up. And ask them if you can have vendors and stuff.... thats how to make some cash. Hell I might even get in on that side... I have an idea I KNOW will work.

Yeah, that's what I've had in my head the whole time. I mean, the whole 9 yards idea of having a dedicated private track event, sponsors, magazine media, etc. is the ultimate goal, but it's one that'll need time, experience, people's involvement, and a dedicated following! :)

the price per person would depend on how many people showed up.. i'll give irwindale a call in the next few days and see what it costs to rent the tack out... i think it would be a good idea though.. or even fontana... we start to get a big response, we can try to get a few shops to sponser us... dont think it would be a problem getting them.. ive made some good connections with a few shops.. Since i got some of them to sponser the Chicane event.. mabe get a venders to go or something... just thinking out load too... if im getting out of hand just let me know... sometime i get overly excited when it comes to putting events together.. the chicane event was only suppose to be a small 30-45 cars or so.. we are up around 150.... lol
While I do commend yourefforts and turnout, it is much easier to get 150+ ppl to clean their cars, and sit around all day drinking sodas and eating burgers. MUCH harder to get 150+ ppl to agree (and pay) to flog and beat the piss out of their cars for the day.
Most people don't like to race at the track b/c they'll see exactly how fast their car isn't....

Sad but, you speak the troof.
wish we could get peeps to run 'em without all the sword crossing!
Hmmm...Mustang Drag Day? Sounds familiar...
LXS, you're 6 years too late! A dragstrip with over 187 Mustangs & Fords, multiple classes from Lightning/Truck to power adder & N/A Mustangs, etc., full magazine coverage in MM (twice in MDD history) and mentions in 5.0, Race Pages, Car Craft, & Mustang Weekly, sponsors like Innovative Turbo, Vortech & Paxton, AFR, JBA, D Motorsports, to name a few, plus participation from the major Mustang shops in the SoCal area, B Racing, X2C Motorsports, Extreme Automotive, Ben Alameda Racing, Fast Track Performance, GTR Hi Po, Earl's Automotive, Brandt Racing, Haro's Racing ELA, G, S.T. Motorsports. Shit, we had racers from North California, Nevada and Arizona! It all went down in March of 2003 at Los Angeles County Raceway, Sal's Speed Shop's Mustang Drag Days '01-'07.
You really want to race your Mustang? PSCA Ford Racing Mustang Maddness, just ask Alfredo!

Win or lose, I don't care (I'd like to win though lol). It's all about going to the track and having a good time and hanging out with all you peeps.

6 years too late, but I'm fine with that :) Besides, the slowest car there was probably an 11sec car lol I'm just trying to organize a friendly race meet/event where the "regular Joe" can participate in and not have to worry about competing against big name shops etc. No money on the line, and no pressures, and just an all around good time to be had! :)

Nope, it had bracket racing too, and ppl were racing stock V6s, classics...everything
My MDDs were $20 to race and $10 to watch. The majority of the cars were Mustangs just like those that everyone on here drives. Greg, Darren & Kevin can fill you in on the details.

Nice! Sounds like it was a pretty awesome day! By name dropping you did, you made it sound like it was an all out shop vs. shop event! And Adam was there? That musta been around his first or second year running ST Motorsports! I remember having met him when he was still a tech at Dodge! :)
Mustang Drag Days ran for 7 years with about 2 events a year.
Here are some of my racers, the cars, the friendships, the memories. This was during the final year; 2007.
