View Full Version : Rear end gears: FRPP vs. Motive vs. etc...
What's the real main difference between them all? I've heard lots of people complain about the Motive gears, but why? Is it just because they're louder then the FRPPs? What about Richmond gears? Summit/Jegs brand gears, etc.? Thanks! :)

there is richmond, yukon, motive, frpp, pro5.0, etc...a lot of manufacturers makin gears now...shit i think even summit and jegs have their own brand....
for my car tho, i would only use FRPP and maybe a set of motives...maybe.
Motive: WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE FRPP: ....
Thank you.
Huh?  :whoknows:

Just because they are louder...? Thats not enough reason to you?
The guy I go to wont fuck with anything other than Ford gears.

Any money you might save on the front end, you'll spend on the back end trying to get them to setup right.

Honetly, I could care less about noise. Unless they're talking about harmonic vibration noise that'll tear shit up, then that's different. But if it's just noise, I don't give a shit! It's not like I'm sitting right behind my car's rear end driving from there! LoL :D With the loudness of my exhaust and system bumping, I highly doubt I'll ever hear a peep from waaaay back there :)
Now if it's a quality issue, FRPP vs. Motive, etc., then that's a whole 'nuther ballgame! :)

hmm. IIRC, mark had said something not too long ago about the quality of motive gears. it was definitely on the old board, so hopefully when he sees this, he'll chime in.
me? i couldn't be happier with my FRPP gears. :D

Well I think if a gear set makes noise that speaks to the quality of said gear set.
Gears in street cars are not supposed to make noise.
From what I heard all FRPP gears part number ending with '-M' are made by Motive. If you take enough time in the setup, you shouldn't have a problem. Setting up FRPP gears is way easy, you basically can resue factory shims and you're done. With different manufactures you need to properly measure pinion depth to have the correct backlash setting. I set up my rear end in my 5.0 coupe with a non FRPP brand 3.27 gear and had 0 problems with noise after installation.

I in no way have any knowledge as to how gears are made, but I do know that depending on the cut of a gear, it'll determine if it'll be quiet or make noise. Just look at gear drives and transmissions. I don't remember which brand trans it is (I think it was Tremec?), but I remember see that they made two different gear cut trannys, a quiet one and a loud one. The quiet one was made because the louder one wasn't going to be accepted on certain race venues, or something like that. So, like I said earlier, if the noise is due to bad quality that'll lead to broken parts, then yeah, I'd definatly avoid that shit like the plague! LoL :D

There are certain sound frequencies you just can't tune out. Gear whine happens to be one of them. I think it's hit or miss with the motives. Their 3.90's are pretty tempting when I freshen up the rear end.

the only reason i would go motive is for the 3.90's

Well from what i remember is that richmond made the old ford gears then for switched over to motive for the manufacturing. I have motive 3.55s because ford stopped making the 3.55s for some reason couldn't find ford 3.55s. So i went with motive and had Currie set-up my rear end when i had the tru-track and moser axles put in. I have absolutely no gear whine from my motives so its all in how it is setup and who sets it up.

noise might not necessarily relate to quality, but why risk installing ones that might whine when you can get ones that won't?

The only Motive gears I would ever consider are the 3.90's but thats just because FRPP doesn't make them....otherwise FRPP always

I don't understand, what "risk" is there? If the nose/whine has nothing to do with a bad quality product, then what "risk" is there?
If all things being equal, if someone said, "it's all personal preference, do you want to be quiet, or do you want to be noisy and let people know you're coming?" That I could undestand!
I've got nothing against FRPP, as I would like to get some FRPP gears, but I wanted to get a better undestanding as to why Motive is hated on, yet I've never heard anyone mention other brands :)
If it's all a matter of choosing one you like, such as choosing a CAI (K&N vs Steeda, JLT, etc.), then I could also understand that.
Oh yeah, thanks for the link!

Ford Racing doesnt make 4.56's so I didnt have a choice :look:
Motive makes some of Fords gears (4.10 and up) like kyle said.

All right, let's do some rumor control as I am reading some stuff that is somewhat of an urban myth in the mustang community.
Both Pro5.0 and Richmond gears I would recommend against due to the inconsitancies that we have experienced on the few occasions that we have installed them (almost exclusively due to customer providing them).
The only brand that we have NEVER had any issues with are FRPP gears.
They are either made here at Fords plant or imported from Italy.
The "x" company makes Ford gears is only semi true.
For about a year to two year period, Motive made the FRPP 4.10 gearsets, but that has not been the case for some time now.
The FRPP Ford 4.10's did in fact come with an "F" at the end of the part number and the Motive's ended in "M".
3.27; 3.55; 3.73; 4.30; ring and pinions were and are made by ford.
Motive has two lines of gears, the stock replacement and the Motive Performance line.
We have had quite a bit of experience with those sets and it has been relatively ok except for the 3.90 gearsets. Those I would definately recommend against as no matter how you set them up (at least the couple of batches we recieved) they would make noise.
I almost exclusively used that gearset on s197's as it would be the perfect gear but no matter if they were set up at ten thousandths, looser or tighter, they would make noise.
We finally got word from Motive that they were having a tooling issue. I have not heard any different since.
Long story short, if you don't want any potential issues popping up, do the FRPP gears. They have dropped in price so much lately that it is a no brainer to try and save a couple of bucks and go with someone else.

damn shame about the 3.90's. those would be perfect.

Sweet! That's exactly the kind of answer/info I was looking for! I'm especially happy to hear that Motive DOESN'T make the gears I'm looking to get! :gears:  :D

i never said anything about quality, just that they are rumored to whine more than the frpp equivalent.
it's not like you're buying mufflers... do people buy gears hoping will make noise now?

I never said you said anything about a bad quality product, I brought that up on my own stating that *if* the noise was due to a bad product which will end in a blown rear end, then I could understand why people would avid those gears. Now if the noise was merely a result of how a gear was cut, and in no way improvised the quality of the product, then personally, I don't see what's wrong with a little noise!?
