So i was watching a movie and the police officer said he could hold the suspect for 24hours hold with no charges.

Can they do this ?

It was the movie with Nicholas Cage where he is a gun dealer , Lord of war or something like that.

I'm no leo but I think a suspect or person of interest can be held for up to 72 hours without being charged.

A suspect can be held for a "reasonable" amount of time at the station if their is "probable cause" to believe that he has committed the crime that he is in custody for.

Once booked for a crime, the city attorney or district attorney has exactly 48 hours from the time of arrest to get the suspect arraigned (not counting non court days). The DA's will use this time to read the report if decide whether they will even file the case. If they decide the Officers did not have enough to get the suspect convicted, then they will often drop charges or drop them to a lesser charge. ie... felony spousal abuse could get dropped to misdemeanor spousal abuse.

We can't keep someone in custody without having some evidence, facts or witnesses that link that person to the crime. ie.. string of robberies are committed with a guy in a blue saturn. Crime reports suspect description matches and you found a ski mask in the car. Now the detectives have the 48 hours to gather evidence or witnesses identifications to formally charge the guy for the robberies. If they come up short, then the guy walks.

A suspect can be beaten for a "reasonable" amount of time at the station if their is "probable cause" that he has committed the crime that he is in custody for.

Once framed for a crime, the city attorney or district attorney has exactly 48hours to transefer the suspect from cell to cell from the time of arrest to get the suspect arraigned (not counting non court days). The DA's will use this time to forge the report and decide whether they will even file the case. If they decide the Officers did not plant enough drugs to get the suspect convicted, then they will often drop charges or drop them to a lesser charge. ie... felony spousal abuse could get dropped to misdemeanor animal abuse.

We can't keep someone in custody without having some manufactured evidence, fabricated facts or paid off witnesses' that link that person to the crime. ie.. string of robberies are committed with a guy in a blue saturn. Crime reports suspect description matches and you found a ski mask in the car. Now the detectives have the 48 hours to gather evidence or coerce witnesses identifications to formally charge the guy for the robberies. If they come up short, then the guy walks, and then we hunt him down later.
