View Full Version : Full Throttle Bog

I started getting a slight bog when going full throttle. Anything up to 70/80% throttle and It feels strong and normal. Once I try pulling off a nice 2nd gear full throttle pull, I get an annoying bog with backfire 'n' all. Replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, changed my oil(just cuz it was almost time) and slapped a new air filter onto my JLT. Still there. Any ideas? Maybe Fuel Pressure Sensor? I'd say a CoilPack if it were consistent through all amounts of throttle. Bumming me out because I stopped driving it since it started :(
Have you cleaned your MAF yet? If it were one of the COPs, it'd be missing and not bogging. When my COP was gone, it drove around fine on the street and light freeway cruising, but as soon as I jumped on it (noticed it big time at Irwindale and Fontana), it'd start missing pretty bad! I had no top end whatsoever  Bought a near new/low mileage set of COPs on ebay from Kar Kraft (I believe they're selling under a different name now), and problem was solved! GL man, lil gremlins are always a PIA!!

Oh yeah, have you checked for any vacuum leaks around the CAI?

How did the plugs look? Does it only do it under load? Sounds like a bad coil. Tps doesn't really have adjustment on the machs you can adjust the idle speed and it affect the idle voltage of the tps but won't affect anything other then idle.

Your car is gana blow up! I say u remove all your oil, run only 1 can of slick 50 pump 87 and do burnt outs till the bogg goes away and take it to Swanson to tune it..

I've been wanting to swap out COP's since I bought the car; just felt right to change them out, but dam things are a little pricey. I'm gonna look up those ebay listings, see what's up! :D I'll do some research on the TPS on these newer 32v. Thanks for the tips, definitely think one of these is a winner (probly the COP's) Muchas Gracias!!

You have to check each coil for primary and secondary windings resistance, and make sure the boots are okay, I can help if you want to stop by today. Oh ya some Problems only happen with high voltage - the coil breaks down, and you can't see it with small-signal measurements (Ohmmeter and LCR meter, so a scope is might be needed but I have a paisa way of testing them lol
Other day we had an 05 f-150 with no p codes come in but it had a rough idle sometimes and underload would bog all the coils where firing, so I pulled a plug and my luck the plug broke lol dam 3 valves. So we changed all the plugs.
Ran good for about 50 miles then it started acting up again and customer brought it back. So I checked the coils and sure enough the secondary winding was out of spec. Changed the coil and we checked up with the customer about 2 weeks later and he says it's running like new :)
Here's some pics of the plugs lol

4V cops: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/pts/2047271078.html
Keep in mind, not all 4V COPs are the same! Back when I had my bad COP problem, Ken loaned me two COPs that he had and they did NOT fit!! The inside of the COP "tunnel" for the plug/harness was shaped different and my harness could not plug into the COP I borrowed from him.

:orly: Didn't know that, good info to know.
Dude, I just remembered, I still have my old COPs, if you're around the East LA area, you could come on down and we can swap one of my good COPs in and try to find the culprit on your motor.
If you washed (or power washed) your engine bay recently, chances are it's gonna be one or both of the rear COPs. Also, if you did wash the engine bay, be prepared to have a squeaking TOB soon! :donny:

I think all 99 and ups are the same (for the 4-valve 4.6/5.4). Thanks Serg, I might just hit up my cousin, has some "insider" deals at his job (auto parts) and see if he can set me up with some oem COP's. If all doesn't go to %100 operational, I'll probly be shooting you a text for some of your troubleshooting expertise lol

Definitely had this happen to me before. Not washing the engine directly but my shaker was off and I was washing the car (sometime during the painting-prep) and managed to soak up the rear driver side cover; it seeped in and I started a bad misfire. The tested as fails real easily, so I replaced both rear COP's with my cousin's spares and done dealy! :) But my TOB bearing did start to make some noise shortly after, on cold starts, before warming up the tranny?? I never even thought the issues could have been water related! :O
Yeah, the 3650s have a heat vent on the bellhousing, and whenever you wash or get water to the rear of the motor, it falls directly onto the bellhousing and into/thru the vent and directly onto the TOB!

Fwiw, the COPs I borrowed were 00/01 and didn't fit. Not sure if it's just a Cobra-Mach thing, or if it was just a simple design change from one year to the next :whoknows:

Dammit! That explains it! :( Still rolling on a stock clutch at 45k miles, so I don't mind changing the clutch setup anytime soon :D Fixes my squeaking bearing and puts my mind at ease for a long while under that shifter. Plus I wanted to service that dam loud ass 3650 :angry2:

The solution: Get a T-56

LoL no, they weren't 2v COPs
