I have a friend who has a 96 GT that has an overheating problem.
He says soon as he starts driving the car it gets hot and water starts coming out of the cap.
He already changed the T-stat and he had the Rad flushed. He said his fan still comes on and off.
I told him I think its the water pump went out. Anyone else have any ideas?

Oh ok so I guess its time to call 1 800 Radiator.

Radiator is dead....
Or.... head gasket is toast... water pumps don't just go out... They leak when the seals are worn out or the bearings fail.

Good idea.... cant go wrong at that place

if hes puking out of the radiator cap he's probably blown a headgasket. overpressurizing the system. theres little strips u can buy at napa that'll check for exhaust gasses in the cooling system. or he can prolly just do a compression check and i bet passenger side is toasted.

with the car cold, fill up the radiator and take the cap off. turn the car on. if the water in the radiator bubbles....its a blown head gasket.
oh yeah, im assuming the water pump still turns, right? not siezed or anything?

I thought mod motors hardly ever blow a headgasket

they very rarely do...they usually overheat for some other reason, and then blow the gasket. or if you like a certain friend of mine, you throw a whipple on it, boost the hell out of it, and then blow the gasket.

Mason if this is your buddy that you brought by a while back, nothing would surprise me. That car had some issues for sure.
Before you start throwing parts at it, pressure test the cooling system.
Water pump either works or doesn't so I doubt that would be the culprit.
Radiator might be it, but like others here have said, if it gets to operating temp and starts spewing without the needle showing an overheat, that is going to be headgasket.
Like Derek said, go to Vatozone and get the Hydrocarbon test strips.

No the car actually gets hot. It over heats and it starts coming out of the rad cap.

he couldve gotten hot or low on coolant and now has a bubble in the system. i know i had a hell of a time burping all the bubbles out of mine when i did a flush. i think i ran it for like half an hour with the cap off and id look and the level would keep going down... we dont have the nifty "high crossover tube fill port" like the cobras do.
Tell him to replace his "710"! :steve:

what other symptoms is it showing? just over heating? loss of power? etc?

If the bubbles smell like exhaust, look to the head.

Just overheating.
It started out when he would turn on the A/C then it would get hot.
Then it just got worse after that. He says now he cant even go a few blocks wit out the car overheating.

i had a real bad overheating issue with my dsg saleen, turns out it was the heater core. i'm driving it now with the lines pluged up.

yeah, if all it is doing i just overheating, no other symptoms, i would say its a clog somewhere. do you know if his car has had the re-call done to it? remember the 96 had a horrible issue with overheating.

Yeah he already by-passed the heater core.

have him check it. there should be a recall label on the car somewhere, usually on the hood to show that its been done. if its not there, then see if he still has the stock honey comb grill. that should have been removed as part of the recall.
either way, for him to have been over heating that quick, i wouldnt blame it on the 96 issues unless he happens to always drive at WOT with the a/c on full blast in 90+ degree weather. you guys sure its not leaking anywhere? mine had a leak under the intake manifold (water pump nipple) that would cause my car to over heat in hot weather

if it's overheating and the fan is turning on/off then there is air in the system that needs to be bled out

if dude does end up replacing the radiator (which i dont think he should unless theres a hole in it...) he needs to know that 96 is a special year with a special fan assembly for 96's only. you need to mention this when going to autozone or 1800radiator. 1800radiator found mine without any problems but the first one they delivered wouldnt mount up to my fan. it was wwaaaaaaayyyy off.
