View Full Version : Someone coming out of retirement...

Ed from Eds Speed Shop AKA silverpoison has been busy over the last year. Between getting married, having a kid, and starting a business he decided to turn the street car up some... it will still be street driven, but more track oriented.
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o289/GregRET/New%20RET%20Shop/TTbuilds012.jpg
I starting pulling things apart and decided to take a before shot... everything is coming out of the engine bay for the new stuff. We will also coat the timing cover....

Someone asked me why pull the motor out... there is a few reasons. One is to run the BS3 we need to install lockouts. The turbo and downpipes are in the way of the valve covers. Another reason is he wants the timing cover coated, and possibly the valve covers. The last thing is he wants the engine very clean, so I was to start from zero.
BTW his twin 57mm Garrett turbos are for sale. $1k for both of them...

You could sell your Eaton set up and probably only come out of pocket a couple grand.
Seen his car the other day you left, he's going all out isnt he?
Not all out... but it will be faster. He wants to get the heads ported but I told him just to leave the longblock alone until it blows... then build a big motor.
BTW he still cant register here lol

Nice, I'm with you on that one. Just leave the motor alone and add more boost :D It'll speed up the process on the big motor build

Since he cant register here I will post this for him. We are changing things up some... Complete 3v longblock, sealed with freashly powder coated black valve covers, and black timing cover $3500! This is a built shortblock (aluminum), stock heads and cams, cams are not locked out. If you want just pay for the lockouts and installation would be no charge. This is from oil pan up, slap a intake on and its ready to go. I think this motor has about 10k mi on it, I will find out for sure.
JPC intake coated silver $800
THP twin turbo kit with twin 57mm turbos cold side is polished. Hot side was just picked up from the coaters and is black. $6000
Selling everything to change things up :asthanos:

The converter was ordered today, there is a couple of other things comming already, the motors is the same, we just changed to a melling oil pump with billet gears (4V), some of you may ask why a 4v oil pump, the reason is because the big stuff 3 requires the cams to be locked, the 3v comes with VCT and the oil pump for that set up makes a lot of oil pressure to operate the VCT, now that the lockouts are in the $V oil pump is perfect, plus there is no oil pump with billet gears for the 3v..... We are assuming the car will be is the very low 9 Sec zone, who knows maybe i'll hit a 8s ET, for now we are keeping the 57 mm turbos and the car went on a lil diet to achieve thae goal..
this car will still be driven on the street ocasionally and will retain the power window, power locks, radio...etc....

So when is Ed gonna finish his ride
Twin ret vs single turbo Mach :/ I know his gonna be faster but you never know history might repeat itself :)
Greg@RET

Wow man.... Find out what a 91mm flows and what 2 67mm flows and get back to me. If I wasn't so deep in it already I would just run a single myself. But I originally drove this car on the street so did a tt. But last time I checked I ran a 8.2@170 with a 1.4 60' and banging the limiter at 8k rpms. I would say there is more left.
Stop trying to change this thread, it would still be on topic if you would stop making times up.
BISKIT
06-04-2011, 02:39 PM
I was gonna say. Big single is great for making big power but with the lag that comes with it it is not a very street friendly setup. For the purposes of Greg/Mark/Israel where they are solely drag cars and have no intent of being streetable, that is the way to go. Makes sense that if Greg has already based his setup on twins, might as well shoot for the moon with that setup.
Twins are good as you can run two smaller size turbos and get rid of some if not most of the lag but you are limited by simple airflow as to how much it can actually produce.
But again, back to topic.

Twin ret vs single turbo Mach :/ I know his gonna be faster but you never know history might repeat itself :)
Guys it's to show you with that ignorant comment by T76 obviously he doesn't know anything about what he's talking about.

I really don't care as I have no dog in the fight, but I do find it comical that this saga has gone on as long as it has without a single timeslip/dynosheet/race.

My car is built in my back yard
I'm running a single turbo eBay kit
I'm running the stock ecu
I'm running a 26" tire
Stock intake
He has twin turbos
Built by ret
Running big stuff 3 stand alone
Probably gonna run a 28x10.5 tire
Aftermarket intake
Enough talk let's get both cars put back together and line them up.

I would have to say since the car is tuned to stay in open loop and car was tuned with a full exhaust and I was running "open headers" it somehow caused it to run lean. No way for the computer to compesate since o2 are not hooked up and it stays in open loop.
When I went from the t70 .68 ar to the t70 .96 ar my car went from 14 ish idle a/f to barely running in the mornings and getting a p0300 cause it was to lean and would missfire, Retuned it and all was fine.
So since my old injectors where maxed *Idle fuel pressure was about 50psi* I am just gonna let the fabricator finish installing the pipe and install bigger injectors and retune.

I just sold my 60s lol we logged 96psi at WOT at 18lbs of boost a/f was 12.5 and injector duty cycle was 90% with the 60s...
I am gonna run in the 90 range to lower fuel pressure some and have less duty cycle and run 20lbs of boost.

If your car is tuned for open loop then you don't need any O2 sensors, it runs off the maf in open loop.
If your on gas 60's shouldn't be seeing that duty cycle and fuel pressure.

Yes my car doesn't use the o2s so if I change something like a simple a/r housing the ECM doesn't know to add fuel or take away like it happened before.
We kept raising the fuel pressure last time. Kept running out of injector. First we ran out of maf so we added a mafia. I run a 3" coldside tube ( I use the hpx pmas)
Greg@RET
08-25-2011, 08:00 AM
Changing the ar won't change anything at idle and at wot minimal changes. In open loop the maf controls fueling. You can go from a 67 to 76 turbo and long as its the same maf and size it would need minimal changes at wot.
When I tuned fast intentions mach1 it made 930 through a 4r70w on 60# inj and ran 9.0@154 in street trim on slicks and skinnys. A bigger injector is fine, but just letting you know it will work. On Gas.

I know I never expected a simple a/r change would affect a/f we thought when I switched to a t76 with the .96 that somehow i left a vacuum line loose so we put the smoke machine no leaks nothing. Changed the tune to add more fuel and all was well.
Car was running perfect, I haven't changed anything since the last time It hit the dyno, but from a t76 to a t88. same a/r.
So since I was already running high pressure and high duty cycle with the t76 I rather not risk running out of injector and having to trailer my car back another day at the dyno.
Just having a couple of clearance problems with it lol
