I am on my friends laptop right now because something is wrong with my pc.

I have a P3, 384MB of ram and 20 GB harddrive.

Symptoms: Weird sound coming from the hd. I cant really explain it. Most of the time, it will not load. It tries to boot, and goes to a black screen with the Win Xp logo. There is a status bar underneigh it. That bar keeps going left to right trying to load but never loads.

If it was properly loading, it would proceed to load the blue default background sceen and the icons would show up.

I've already scanned it for viruses and remove them and optimize it when i could. The computer works 1 every 30+ times when I try to turn it on.

Oh yeah....i trying to remove the harddrive and had broken the connector that plugs into the back of it.

So..what the hell is going on? :whoknows:

if your harddrive is making noises then its probalby dying. I would get all the data off of it you need asap just in case. I would look into getting another drive. You have to look for IDE ones since your computer is so old. Good luck.

you can still pick up ATA/IDE drives, but they are starting to become a little scarce.

other than that, i agree that the HD is probably sounding its death knell.

tom, it's time for a new computer. seriously. if not new, at least up to a P4.

My HD has gone out before...but last time it was making a clicking sound. That was replaced. This time its making a semi clicking sound on my newer harddrive

I'm gonna try to back up the hard-drive onto my friends external HD. Is there a way to back it up in DOS mode? Should I still have access via Safe Mode?

I'm aiming for a new computer in a few months...thanks to Sean for giving me some ideas; i.e. Fry's
