Well we went to go see it last night.
Overall I think that the movie as a standalone delivers all the action you would want and is decent in it's own right.
As part of the franchise though I was a little disappointed.
As far as a continuation of the story it really didn't stand out and move the overall story arc forward much. There was little left to any character development and don't expect the big twists delivered by the previous 2 movies.
Christian Bale as Batma.. I mean John Connor is ok. Although it seems he has only one voice to give and that is Batman.
I was actually surprised at Sam Worthington (Marcus Wright) who definately carried the movie.
Bryce Dallas Howard was possibly the biggest disappointment as her role (replacing Claire Danes) as Kate Brewster (now John's wife) is marginal at best.
Like I said, plenty of action to go around in true McG fashion (ie: Charlies Angels 1,2) but in some cases it draws out a little longer being a little self serving at times.
The obligatory lines "I'll be back" and "Come with me if you want to live" both make an appearance but in both cases seem a little forced (you'll see what I mean).
SPOILER ALERT!!!!! If you want to read below, highlight it, but I warn you, it will give away major plot points.
Ok, there are a couple major things I have issue with.
1, The ending just plain blows. The whole heart transplant deal is just stupid.
2, The unbeatable T-800 "arnie" at the end was kind of lame. He got doused with molten metal and was able to survive and go on with little to no damage. Last I checked both the T-1000 and T-800 in T2 were destroyed this way.
3, Why in gods green earth would skynet go through such an elaborate path to get John Connor to skynet and not just have 50 T-101's at the building waiting for him. Furthermore, if they REALLY wanted to terminate Connor, all they would have had to do was kill Kyle Reese who was already in their possession. If he is dead before he is sent back, Connor is never born.
Furthermore, if Connor REALLY wanted Skynet to be destroyed and Judgment Day to never have happened, then all he would have to do is put a bullet in his own brain. If he does not exist, skynet would never had had to send back a Terminator to kill him which then would not have gotten into the hands of Cyberdyne --> USAF --> CIS to be developed into skynet.
4, I felt very let down by the fact that we never get to find out why skynet is just collecting and imprisoning humans. They are not killing them or putting them to work so it makes little to no sense.
5, I know that they are planning further sequels but to be honest I would have really been happy and fulfilled to see the story end here with Kyle going through the time displacement device and John dying.
6, In T3 (realtime: 2003) it is explained that Cyberdyne was aquired by the government which continued the research and that CIS (Col. Brewster) developed skynet. So then how is it possible that at the beginning of TS it is 2003 and we see paperwork being signed by Marcus that reads "Cyberdyne Systems".
I will come up with more later.
