View Full Version : what gears should I run?

Yes tons of threads but I get mixed answers from different forums, I am kinda leaning towards going back to 3.55s though.
I read that what matters is go as high up as you can till you are almost at redline by the end of the 1/4. Dunno if thats the route I should take though but sounds like I might.
Some people say go 3.27s
Now heres the thing, I got 4.10s when my car had 3.27s but didn't think I would go through with the turbo install. Waste of money....
Another thing I am building the motor after building the rear end, I have the rods, pistons, rings, bearings. Didn't go with a stroker kit just got forged parts with 9.1:1 compression (11cc dish pistons) and turning up the boost to around 18. So take that into account if that matters any?
I am also getting 31 spline axles and the dif to go with it.

the diameter of your tires will change what gearing you need. I don't know the math, but I know that will make a difference.

I will be running 305/35/18s.

I believe your mach came with 3.55 not 3.27's.
Just put the stockers back on.

One of gregs techs is close friends with the old owner of the car, he told me it had a built rear end but took it out and put a gt rear end, right before selling it. They are gone now..

3.55 should be the highest gear u should run IMO, but then again, i dont know much about turbos and whatnot.

yep, the mach's had 3.55's. i'm pretty sure they also came with 31-spline rear axles, but don't quote me on that.

Not sure if they will work but I have a set of 3:55's I just took out of my S197 with 41,000 miles on them.

they will indeed work with out a problem.
You should post up your price for him to see what you will let them go for. ;)

Would a dyno sheet be helpful in selecting gears?

No, but they are great for saying what you have, but never showing up to the track :look:
Be real and serious with yourself. What is your car going to be used for.....NOT, "oh well I would like to do this, maybe a little of that, bla bla bla, etc., etc., etc." If the car is going to be a straight line race car and that's it, then I wouldn't recommend going with anything over 3.73s....but it also depends on what future plans may or may not bring. For all we know, 3.55s *could* be the perfect gear for you, or heck, even going all the way down to a set of 3.08s might be the ticket. It all depends on how you build your motor, what size rim/tire set up you go with at the track etc.
Do you plan on upgrading your tranny in the near future? Tranny gearing can also affect your overall rpm range while on the street/freeway and track. Just remember, the shorter the tire, the faster it'll spin, the taller the tire, the longer it'll take for it to spin.

I'm sorta in the same boat.. I'm currently upgrading my 3rd to 31 spline. I would stay with my stock 3:55s if it wasn't for the fact that I have over 100 passes on the stockers. Don't want to put them on a new diff just to have them let go. Alot of gung-ho types have suggested 4:10s to get the best ET, but I still like to DD the car. Just for S&Gs I'm going to do 3:73s.
I don't push the kinda boost your going to have when you forge and turn up the wick though. As of right now I get 0 traction on 315 street tires in first gear. While building the rear I'm also slapping on some quality UCAs and LCAs, I'm confident it should plant then.

I'm only on a 285 tire :/ first gear if I launch above idle it will just sit and spin.
You getting anything done to the suspension?

I was going to put on some Metco upper and lowers but, my budget took a shit when my water heater busted a gut last night:angry2:
So for know just diff, axles, gears and girdle cover.

Only 03 Cobra and everything but v6 05+ got 31 spline.
IMHO you shouldn't even consider anything higher than 3.55's.
I have 3.90's in Twisted and they are coming out in favor of some 3.55's and the only reason I am not going all the way back to 3.31's is because of the 20's going on her.

As long as they are still good. The pinions usually get roughed up in the uninstall process.

40 bucks, come pick up a new 3.31 ford gear set. should be perfect for a peaky turbo setup on the street with that short tire...

Wow, hard to tell from that pic but, it looks like the axle end. Have you done alot of clutch drops/passes?
What arms did you decide to go with? Also have you decided on a gear?

not many and ive only had teh car 6 months or so... got some off the guy I bought my injectors and mass air flow from over at muscle motors.
Havent decided on gear yet...car actually bogs more if I dont rev it up for a launch. Before it would spin and get into boost pretty quick and just be all over the road and only hooked up till I was in third. Now I am not sure I havent played with it much but I do know car hooks up better.

you want to gear it so you dont have to shift as soon as it gets into boost and power..its gonna bog till it spools up, but that goes to waste if you have to shift right away...load that turbo so it can stay in boost for longer and you can concentrate on driving the car and not just spinning and shifting...steep gears are just a band-aid for lack of power, with a turbo you dont have that.

You got to see it in person and even a pull or two on sunday :) brian liked my rims lol
Oh ya im a dork leaving my hood open and not finding out till on the freeway :angry2:
I am still debating what gears to get... I dunno why but I am thinking 3.73s or 3.55s. I think 3.31s might be to low, even with a built motor cause when I build it, its gonna have less power until it gets into boost. I dunno It was a pain putting the 4.10s in and dont want to do it two times lol

Please listen to Miz. Seriously, you'll have a lot more fun when you can stay in boost longer.

If you are running 17's / 18's don't be afraid to go back down on the gear. Brian is correct. With a manual even moreso than an auto, the little bit of loss you will have in the lowend till the turbos spool up is more than made up for by the longer duration you can stay in boost before having to shift.

get the engine built and up and running and you will know what gear it needs..
not the simplest thing choosing a gear for a combo that not done yet....
