are you sure the sending unit for your oil pressure gauge just hasn't gone bad?
oil pumps don't typically die, btw, the oil pressure issue would be something else.
but yes, it's a bitch of a job, 5 hours at $100/hr sounds very fair to me.

usually if the oil pump goes out, you'll know it in a couple miles. motors dont like running without oil.
+1 for checking the sensor. ford units dont have the best reputation for being "accurate"

Exactly as said above.... either your sending unit is bad (or has loose connection), or you have a main / rod bearing issue. Pumps don't just go bad like that without something else being wrong. Also... get a mechanical gauge that you can connect to get a real reading. The Ford gauge is not very accurate to begin with.
Change the sensor ($8) and pull the oil filter, cut it open and see if it is full of copper filings.
Also... its a bitch of a job. You have to unbolt the motor, lift it high enough for the pan to clear the hump... then somehow seal it all back up without leaks. If the motor has a ton of miles, pull the motor yourself and spend the money on a rebuild.

I also heard that oil pumps have to be "shimed" for clearence?? Is this true??
+1 for the sending unit. My old 5.0 had a gauge issue too. At idle it would not read pressure til I would rev it. I changed the sending unit and the guage worked perfect after that.
