I know I would benefit from a tune but is it necessary?
also its a 99GT and a 2001 5.4 2v

stock 5 speed 99 GT computer 24lb injectors and 01 cobra maf, also stock p.i. intake with rr adapter plate.
I'm not looking for alot of performance right now but I threw a bearing in the 4.6 and just need to get rolling again and I got a opportunity to upgrade

With the cobra maf, I'm going to say yes.

its calibrated to the 24lb injectors, got the maf and injectors from my brothers car, but would there be another reason for it needing to be tuned?

Different curve possibly. Might want to ask Greg.

Every set up is different even with the exact same set up. Obviously I will tell you it needs a tune, but even if that wasnt my business I would tell you the same thing.

it needs a tune, I picked up about 40rwhp with the tune on my DOHC swapped `97gt, using the stock `97gt harness/computer, 24lb injectors and the stock gt MAF.
Been planning to get it re-tuned for awhile now, just been too busy, would like to throw on the 90mm lightning MAF I've got set aside for it.
my car was running quite rich before it was tuned, ran/drove fine though, I drove it around for about 3 weeks to make sure it was running right before I hit the dyno.

say I'm swapping the whole motor with all the bells and whistles, and the car I am swapping from had a custom tune, could I use his custom tune/chip?

If he used the Cobra MAF, I don't see why not.

Abaco MAF > lightning MAF

No. Not to sound harsh but a tune from me is $400, how much is your new combo?

every computer code is different, even if the combo is identical the tune wouldn't work and there would still be variables to be accounted for.

I figured the eec codes were the same lol. If they are different it wont work for sure...

When he said bells and whistles, I assumed he'd use the same computer. If not, yeah, tune needed.

you can't just move the computer on a 99 mustang, the PATS wouldn't even let the engine start unless it was completely reprogrammed by a dealer, which would probably kill the custom tune in the ECU anyways.

i assume you're using a dump truck motor out of an f150? 5.4 2v ftl 5.4 dohc ftw..go find some cobra heads

a friend of mine has a 99 GT with a 5-speed, so Im assuming the same computer, and he swapped in the 5.4 got it tuned and it was running fine but then wrecked it, I'm getting everything I will need to swap his setup into my car for $1000, but I wont have extra for a tune and I just need it driveable until I can get it re-tuned.

why wouldn't it work if he's switching over the wire harness and complete engine?

What chip/tuner is it? You can simply have any tuner disable the PATS on the chip. Use your friends ECU w/ his chip/tune and, if it ran fine before, it will run the same for you.....

my friend did a `96 v6 swap with everything from a `99 cobra, so unlike my swap he used the harness and computer from a `99.
he ended up having to tow it to a dealer and have them re-do the PATS system, cost him ~$800
his car is tuned with an sct, tuner tried to disable everything PATS related but it still wouldn't start and spat out PATS error codes.

do you have no idea how it works? Because the key wouldn't match the computer, therefore it won't allow fuel, spark, or crank. The only way to do it AFAIK is to take the instrument cluster, the steering column, the key, and the computer.

put it all together and see how it runs.. that maf and injectors will work together, but I think it has to be an 80mm lightning maf to work with the 24's.. you will know after it all up and running weather or not it needs a tune.. Sure a custom tune will extract the most power but that can be said about any combo stock or modified...

If he has matching computer, cluster and key he shouldn't be having PAT's issues.
On our 97 Those 3 parts were transferred from the 99 (along with engine, trans, etc) and car fired right up on the first try.

my friend couldn't get the steering column/key or cluster from the donor unfortunately, he kind of pieced the wiring together with ebay purchases of different harnesses and the ECU.
