hi everybody i had a question for a buddy of mine who owns a 67 with a 289 motor in it its been recently rebuilt and bored over.04... he needs help deciding what will benefit him more powerwise a 347 stroker kit or a novi charger:boost: that they sell for the 289..the novi charger recommends stock compression ratio.he is also wondering if he shod keep his stock rearend or upgrade to a 9 inch or one of a explorer and if so if its a smart decision to stay with 3.55,3.73, or 410 gears.....he is running an auto tranny.. all advice is appreciated thanks

I would go with the novi charger and an explorer rearend with 3.73's, is it an auto or a stick? You'll want overdrive with any gears more than the 3.00's that it probably has in it now, either a T5 or AOD swap.

Personally, I wouldn't boost a 289. I'd say he's better off building a 347 and boosting that bish! As for the tranny, is he gonna stick with a C4? If so, I HIGHLY recommend it being (re)built to handle anything over 350-400hp! I'd stay away from a C6 tranny cause it'll just add more weight and take more/longer to wind up them a C4 would. Also, depending on what cam/specs the motor is, he's gonna need to invest in a quality torque converter, tranny cooler and shift kit!

Oh yeah, and I wouldn't recommend him buying a Novi "for the mean time" then building up a 347ci. Reason I say this is because, just like a turbo, you can buy a turbo that'll be pefrct for a smaller motor, but once you go to a bigger motor that turbo is worthless! If you buy too big of a turbo for a small motor, then it won't perform the way it's supposed to.

Yes you can easily swap a small pulley on a blower, but if the blower is still too small for a bigger motor, then what's the point? And what would be the point of buying that big blower up front if you don't have a motor ready for it? Get what I'm saying?

In short, build it right the first time, even if it means having to wait and save for a couple of months, cause in the end, everything will work right the first time! Good luck to you and your friend

Go with the 347. Sell the 289 to help with cost..

3000 lockup stall from Edge Racing
BIG tranny cooler
Aod valvebody from Silverfox
3.73 gears

The novi route would be faster and cheaper though. Just not much room to grow with.

Oh yeah, and as for gears, does he want "easy cruising?" Or is performance at the top of his list?

For easy freeay driving, 3.55 to no more then 3.73s are perfect. If he wants the best performance he can get, then 4.10s are the best! I'm not sure how 3.90s are, but I've heard they're a good combo of 3.73s and 4.10s.

Depending on cam/motor/specs, that 3000 stall converter can hurt his performance more then anything. When shopping around for a tq conveter, it's always BEST to have all specs of your motor in hand when calling and talking to a converter company. Then they can match up the best possible converter to meet your needs. :)

the guys to ask about 289s is Mizry (a bit higher compression 8k rpm NA 289, that takes a bit of spray occasionally) and Mario (multiple power adder combos over the years in a 289)....

In case you havent seen it here's a little shot of Miz's 289 in his fastback.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdfvbxjUVKI

Dont have anything of marios car...maybe he does.

A high winding small cube 289 is GREAT for the track and stuff, but if this guy is looking for his '67 to be a daily driver that sees more street then track duty, then a high winding 8k rpm 289 is pointless for the street. He can easily afford to lose some top end for better bottom end tq and a nice flat tq curve across the board. Anyway, just my $.02 :)

Anything less than a 3k stall on even a mild 347 is a waste. Lockup for better fuel efficiency and to not have to upgrade input shaft. Less heat in the tranny as opposed to nonlockup as well.

I'm not too familiar with lock up and non lock up converters, but if a motor doesn't NEED a super high converter (some people think 3k is "super high"), you'll be heating up the tranny for nothing! Regardless of what stall, anything higher then stock and you NEED a tranny cooler! As for better fuel economy, a tranny that doesn't sit there winding up waiting for the tranny will net you better drivability, and therefore, better fuel economy. As for how much fuel "economy" you'll get also depends on the motor and of course, driving habits.

And just because you have a 347 does not mean you "need" a 3k stall converter! There are LOTS of waaay bigger motors out there that do NOT need a 3k stall converter! Like I said, everything depends on your motor's specs and what you intend to do with the car.

That may be true in theory but since I dont know how much bottom end was lost by going to a higher compression setup. So I dunno about it being "pointless". And if he is gonna use it as a daily does he really want to put a blower on it?
Anyway, one thing I'm pretty sure of is that the old 289 blocks aren't really great to use for a stroker setup...

So now he is up to buying a 302 block and putting a stroker kit in there.
Or maybe leave the 289 as it is and give it more gear.

If I had a another '65 Mustang, I wouldn't mind building a high revving 289 just for shits and giggles  :gears: :D

It's hard to really suggest/recommend what someone should do if we're not speaking to that person directly. We're all pretty much guessing and going off of what we would do.

Exactly. I drive my fox daily and the 3k is perfect. You get what you pay for. I've seen my dynosheet and the convertor throws me right into the meaty spot of my power band. The car is insane from a dig. who in their right mind would want to putt around with a boring slushbox? Not most stang owners I know.

my 289 will drive just fine everyday, it was a daily from 95-01, it will survive in some pretty severe idling and stop an go conditions and still make power past 7000........ you will get nothing but headaches with a blower or turbo...a stroker would be the best way to go all around, BUT for a 67 I would not even consider 289-347 when a 408 fits perfect...

Yeah Miz is a homey from way back... hooked me up a few times. So he always gets a recommendation from me.
