View Full Version : I got a question for the LEO's about last nite

so i was going to Ken's last night and got pulled over for the license plate bulb being out. I didn't know it was out. So my question is, was it necessary for the lady cop to take me out of the car, check my record and treat me like a criminal? She asked if i had anything illegal on me or in the car. She made me walk backwards with my hands crossed and then put me in her patrol car. Mind you, i wasn't speeding or doing anything stupid. All this for just a burned out license plate light. What would make her check my record and go through all that trouble? I dont look like no criminal? do i? :aaron: She didnt even give me a ticket or warning, she just let me go.

license plate bulb is usually their excuse if they have no other reason to pull you over but think you look suspect and want to run your info

edit - I'm not a LEO but that's my opinion from experience

Routine check.

I called the cops on you and told them you were in the coke business. I guess they took it serious. :lol2:

my friend told me he does it all the time. they go "fishing" and once in a while the car/driver will pop up with a record (or they find something illegal in the car)
maybe she didn't check your plate before she stopped you so she's being safe?

Was she by herself or with a partner? You just profiled. Or perhaps she was menstruating.

I got pulled over for a "dim" license plate bulb. The cop even wrote me up for it and put "dim" on the citation.

You were profiled.... in the right place at the right time.

It happens.

Thats what police work is.

You didnt have anything illegal on you and probably broke no law other than the equipment violation that she let go. You lost a few minutes of your life but werent cited. No no big deal IMO.

Unless she was a lot bigger than you Jaime, I don't blame her for using the procedure she did. Alone and female, she has to rely on procedures not just her gun, to keep her safe.

ive been in that situation 3 times :(. My pops had a FTA for some ticket and they didnt believe i wasnt him. So i was asked the same damn question over and over again and was "detained" ie, put in cuffs and made to sit on the curb infront of my car  . Its fishing, they just run your plate and if anyone who lives at the address has some kinda warrant it will pop up.

Black96SVT

my friend told me that once he pulls someone over that "detained" in their car, "detained" on the curb, or "detained" in the back of his car are all the same thing.
i guess you could always object but everyone knows that usually won't get you anywhere

She saw the stripes on the car and thought you were a street racer. :look: No but that's routine especially if she's by herself and it's late at night, she'd rather be in control of the situation and be safe than sorry. And she was fishing to see if anything would come up, you'd be surprised at how many people have wants for FTA's.

She might be cute, but don't ever date a chick with a gun, you will get shot if you mess up big time or cheat on her. :look:

Hmmm.... I try not to Monday morning quarterback.... but... hmmm...

1. Were you in cuffs?

2. Are you on parole or probation?

3. All she had was the burned out tail lamp?

*cough* 4th amendment violation *cough*

Being scared isn't enough to put people in cuffs... "reasonable suspicion" is the key word here.

For the record...

I ask everyone...
-Are you parole or probation
-Anything illegal in the car
-Do you mind if I check
-What have you been arrested for

Nobody goes in my car without cuffs on..

i wasnt on cuffs.. she just put me in the back seat.. and yeah, the only reason she said she pulled me over was cause of the burned out license plate light. She did ask me if i had anything illegal on me or on the car. She didnt check anything in the car, I don't have no warrants or anything on my record. She did ask me if i had ever been arrested and i said yes :look: many years ago but the charges were dropped. She said for wat and i told her for supposebly having a stoled radio in my car.. and this happened over 18 years ago.. but she did ask me this after i was pulled out of the car.

Its actually a quite common practice. Officers who have any suspicions about you will pull behind and kill their headlights just long enough to see if any of your plate bulbs are out. Can't fully see beacause of the reflective plates. This gives them just cause to follow up on their suspicions. In effect drunk, eyes blown, paranoid etc. Its happened to me a couple of times but, I never had a light out. One CHP even pulled up alongside me and shined his spot directly in my face I guess to see if I would rabbit. This was after the headlight kill gimmik.

Well... see.. this is why I try not to critique anyone else doing their job, when I wasn't there and I do not know all the facts.

Now... pulling you over for a burned out bulb... perfectly legal... Pulling you and any passengers out of the car... supreme court also agrees with that one. Putting you in her car to keep you safe from other motorists on the street... perfectly fine as well. Its not like you were free to go, since the detention was already legit due to the equipment violation.

She did what she needed to do, since she was by herself and probably at a weight disadvantage as well.

Personally... I pull a lot of people out of the car and many of them have battle scars from being shot once or twice in their life. Getting a gun pointed at them "again" is no new thing..

Way off topic....I was thinking about it the other day, LAPD is #2 in the nation in numbers of officers. NYPD has over 26,000 officers. That'd be like every agency in LA County merging under one dept (and still be shy of the 26K mark).

But I bet LAPD's 10K beats more ass than NYPD's 26K :headbang:

Off topic here but, what happens if someone gets into a car accident when/after a cop shines his spot light in his/her face? Back in my late teens and early twenties, I'd have cops flashing their spot lights in my face at night, and on more then one occasion I couldn't see for a few seconds! Sorry, but I've always wondered about that!

they are checking for dialated pupils. Most accidents are cause by someone under the influence.

What bugs me is that those people survive(some with just minor injuries),but the innocent, sober driver/passenger ends up seriously injured or dead.

Actually my judgement comes from being raised in a law enforcement family. In fact I am one of the few members of my family who doesnt sport a badge. I literally grew up at squad parties and hell my own brother is a federal agent. So lets not wave the "hates all cops" banner. Since moving to LA I have been absolutely shocked by how the LAPD conduct themselves. I have lived in many other cities and have never been spoken to or been treated even nearly as I have by the police here. My personal favorite was me politely asking an officer while being pulled over for no front plate. "officer can I make a call to let my boss know that I will be late please." And no it wasnt said in a smartass tone in the slightest, to the little 5'2" latina, and affirmatively actioned cop that pulled me over. To which she replied, "No, for all we know you are calling your homies to come shoot us while we have you pulled over." Really? My Homies? For those whom havent met me I am about the most clean-cut wonderbread whiteboy you have ever seen driving a 2007 vehicle. Not being a dick but just saying. So, I replied "Maam I come from a law enforcement family so I understand your concern, but since I dont drive while on the phone, it would be over the bluetooth speaker so you are welcome to listen in." "Well, if your family is cops then you should know better than to even ask." Now mind you this is all well after I have been pulled over and her partner who actually was nice already went back to the car and had already run my info. That being said Im sure they saw that I own the vehicle, and have a fucking lilly white record. That is one of about 5 different times I , I have witnessed such behavior. Not exactly a huge deal really, just a tiny little cop acting like a hard ass really. But I have seen it repeatedly here and not in other cities. So I will tell you what really pisses me off about it. It is dickheads like that that cause the good cops in my family to get a hardtime. For instance when my brother was just a normal cop, he had his house egged several times and pig written on his car in shaving cream. Similar thing happened to my cousin who is a sherrifs officer back home. It assholes like that, that cause people to hate cops and cause them to distrust and even fear them. Good honest and law abiding citizens should not need to fear law enfocement. They are there to SERVE AND PROTECT. Not harass and intimidate!

If the "partner" was a FTO she would probably have something to prove. My friend said he gets trainees that are completely lost and can't do anything by themselves. Even when he gives them a bad review/report they still "pass" since the dept need more officers. Beggers can't be choosers I guess.

i don't see how thats a justifiable comparison considering with one move of a finger you're life would not cease to exist. the cop was way out of line and a complete ass whipe. i dont have problems with cops as a whole but certain ones are pompous ass holes. if i was older and wiser when it had happened i would have done more.

i agree with ryan in the fact that a few bad eggs spoil the bunch especially when the news blows it way up.

i don't want this to sound like im attacking law enforcement as a whole but merely pointing out that there are bad eggs.

Good honest and law abiding citizens should not need to fear law enfocement. They are there to SERVE AND PROTECT. Not harass and intimidate!

First... Stop breaking the law and Police Officers will have one less reason to stop you. We do not make the laws, we are paid to enforce them. If you dangle that carrot out their, what exactly do you expect (ie. no front plate).

Second... Just because you have family on the job, does not mean you have a clue what it is to be a Police Officer. I had uncles and my brother that started many years before I did and personally, I had no idea.

With that settled. I can only speak for myself. I do not allow people to make phone calls while I have them detained on a traffic stop, bicycle stop and / or ped stop. Why you ask? The girl above nailed it on the head... not to mention the co-worker I have that was actually shot at, after someone baited him into a stop and then called his homie. Maybe she could have been a little more tactful... who knows. At least you even admit we are 50% good, since her partner was nice to you.

I do not know what things are like back home... but maybe they need to find a new neighborhood to live in... or just stop parking the Police Car in front of the house. I would never put my family at risk by advertising where I live. Simple fact.. criminals do not like to be caught and blame others for their wrong doing.

I still don't exactly get your statistics... You continually break the CA vehicle code and then do not accept why you get pulled over. You compare a dept of 10,000 with smaller depts of about 100-250, then pick a few unfavorable experiences to label us by. You call the female Officer corrupt, because she actually cares for the safety of her partner and herself. Does that make her a bad Officer... no. Does she need some sensitivity training.. if it was up to you.. yes.

I know in your head you feel calling your boss at that very moment in time to be logical... but I still don't get it. Why not just sit their, and call when everything is done. Does it change anything... no. Also.... you claim up and down about this squeaky clean white bread record. Great.. we need more people like you. What you don't know is, when I run you on the computer, it lets me know that you aren't wanted for an arrest warrant and whether you have a few FTA's. It does not tell me your criminal record or whether you intend to shoot me in the head when I return to your car. So the crux of it is... you do not know me as an Officer and I do not know you when I make a stop.

Lately my dealings with the popo have been pretty positive. Hell, the last time I even pulled myself over, LOL. I don't drive like an a-hole in my area and get thumbs up from some cops. This is while driving a not so subtle car, driving home from work at around 1-2 in the morning. I recognize most of the LEO's on patrol at that time and vice versa. I feel pretty confident that they are out there protecting my personal property. Your personal safety is your own responsibility.

So the crux of it is... you do not know me as an Officer and I do not know you when I make a stop.

when did I ever complain about being pulled over, I have no problem with that what so ever. I didnt have a plate mounted when I changed out my bumper. Shit happens, I remade the front grille and put one on so I could run one and paid my fines. Hell I dont even have a problem with her wishes for me not to make a call as I understand that a traffic stop can quickly escalate. What I do have a problem with is that nearly without exception my dealings with LAPD officers they have acted similarly without reason. My issue with any law enforcement officer will never be due to their upholding their duty. After all that is exactly what they are here to do. My problem with this particular department is the lack of tact in which I have seen that upholding done. There was no reason what so ever for her not to say "I would appreciate it if you would wait to make your call, Im sure it wont take long." I mean honestly how hard is that?
Where I come from, officers take their cruisers home at night and then drive them back in to the station for their shift. And at the time that happened my brother was living in a very nice residential area with his wife and kids. The police here seem to have a severe us vs. them mentality and whether that is their fault or not it's really too bad.

And I have done several ride alongs thanks

I came very close to becoming an officer myself after college. My brothers capitain has known me for a few years and was acting like a military recruiter. Before my brother became a detective I did a few with him and did one with my cousin as well. Hell great example, my brother and his partner were breaking up a college party at a frat house. Ran one of the DB fratboys ID and he had a warrant, for what I dont recall. The night ended with the frat boy trying to run over my brothers partner john with a car. Striking him and causing a back injury which to this day has caused him to give up motorcycles and has been relagated to desk duty. On top of that he had to stand before a grand jury because he fired at the jackass after FAIR WARNING and I beleive it was one shot that actually hit him. As I have said, I am very pro law enforcement, but the behavior I have personally seen from the LAPD since moving here I find to be disappointing.

QFT! Traffic stops are dangerous and tragedies have occurred from what seemed to be "routine" stops. There is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. Look up the Newhall incident and that will help you understand why police officers do what they do on traffic stops. As for the phone issue, I was with an officer and we were on a traffic stop, the guy was on the phone and wouldn't hang up. When he finally did his cousins and brothers rolled up behind us all 6 of them (he was on the phone with them telling him where he was stopped and to meet him there). That is not a situation you want to be in because who knows what can happen. Officers do what they do in order be able to go home after their shift and not to the hospital or morgue. So what seems like "harassment" to you is the difference between life and death for the officer.

Here's a traffic stop gone bad (warning it's graphic): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blZgg00qO0A

If they want to pull you over they'll look for all those "stupid" minor things like license plates, tint, bulbs, mirror accessories, etc. It would be "cool" if all of them were nice, but they're not customer services reps. Too bad.
If it's that big of a problem just sign up and you'll never get tickets again. You'll be able to talk down to people all day, it's the perfect job.

They have forms at the front desk. Fill that out and someone will do a quick background, and then the captain will sign it. Then about a week later you'll get a call so you can schedule the ride along. The only problem with LAPD is you would have to ride with a Sgt, so most of the time the action has already ended.

I would try Sheriffs or LB, Torrance, Santa Ana or maybe even Inglewood. You can ride with regular Officers.

Not true.

Its called profiling.

when we first got our 2008 camry back in 2007 after 3 months of owning it, it had tags, plates, insurance the whole nine. No tint everything stock front plates.

My girl is driving normal speed and gets pulled over, cops says tags are expired lol I tell him ummm no they are not, he gets mad and says yes they are and ask's for registration insurance license. Sits in the back 5-10 minutes and then says sorry computer must be messed... lol right...

Just a month back I got pulled over in the camry for tinted windows cop got in front of me and kept looking in the rear view mirror I guess to see who was driving. ( I was bald at the time) so I guess he seen a bald guy and decided to pull me over, sat behind me for 10 minutes and then we talked he was really nice though after he ran me I guess. Just gave me a window tint ticket. Took off the window tint the next day lol
