Earlier today while driving to my school site, 1070 radio station reported that there was 1 person in San Pedro infected w/ the Swine flu. During recess, the office manager tells me that two are infected @ 2 seperate schools. Dana Middle School and San Pedro High School. Now, she tells me that one child has died (age 11). This is kinda making me very paranoid since my school site is only 1-2 miles away from these schools. I hope all stay safe and be cautious... :donny:

I would say it's to early to call BS or get overly worked up but is concerning since this is a mutated strain that has not been seen before. Cal state long beach is reporting a case also.

At this point, officials say they have identified only two "probable" cases of swine flu and two "possible" cases of the flu in the county. One of the probable cases involves an 11-year-old, the other a 52-year-old.

Yea..., but she wouldn't just make it up. She was contacted by a source. Anyways, I'll ask tomorrow who her source was and determine if it was credible fact.

The 11 y/o was a student at Dana Middle School (I believe)... I hope the best for families and friends.

watching some news last night, and they kept alluding to the fact that something like 36,000 Americans die each year from the flu...and so far only 150 people have died in Mexico...the one kid that died here wasn't American, he was a Mexican resident visiting some family in Texas

So am I missing something, or is this just another flu, I've had my Influenza shot for the year and so have my daughter and wife but my daughter does go to day care and I'm getting ready to tell my wife to stop taking her there...

My wife is very adamant about hygiene and she makes sure my daughter's hands are always clean and what not. We have bottles of hand sanitizer throughout the house and in her car. I'm not really worried, but I wouldn't want my daughter to get sick because of someone else's kid...that's grounds for some secret pinching underneath the arms when someone isn't looking :look:

I am a preschool teacher in Pomona and the parents of my students are all freaking out over this. I agree that we need to take precautions to keep ourselves healthy. We make sure all of the children wash their hands frequently, cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze, and use a tissue and not their arm or sleeve. I do feel that people are freaking out over nothing. Why is this so frightening to people compared to other strains of the flu? I also heard that 36,000 people die each year from the common flu. Why all of the excitement over this strain?

This is getting crazy, I just went to costco, target, kmart and cvs and they all have sold out of antibacterial soap and hand sanitizers

The last i heard this is a different strain of influenza so i doubt the flu shot would help

it's the same kind that lady from the white house was saying last night is being shipped to states and is confirmed to be effective against this H1N1(?) virus

even if the vaccine is not effective, the idea that it is can keep people from panicking. then when they die, the doctors will be forced to write down an alternate cause of death. That is exactly what is going down in Mexico. My uncle is a doctor there. Small towns have also been quarantined.

i hope my hard drive doesnt get hacked by this byrus :look:

re: the vaccine
the vaccination program was plagued by delays and public relations problems.[45] But on Oct. 1, 1976, the immunization program began and by Oct. 11, approximately 40 million people, or about 24% of the population, had received swine flu immunizations. That same day, three senior citizens died soon after receiving their swine flu shots and there was a media outcry linking the deaths to the immunizations, despite not having any positive proof.

It is concerning because of this quote
"The current strain of swine flu can adapt to humans and spread more efficiently than previously known swine H1N1 strains. Moreover, co-infection of H1N1 swine flu and Oseltamivir resistant H1N1 season flu can lead to acquisition of the H274Y mutation by the swine flu."

The general consensus of most health professionals is they expect this strain to mutate, the H274Y mutation is resistant to Tamiflu which is currently what the US is using to try and combat this strain right now. If i had a small child at this point I would be alot more concerned then I am.

that may be apropo in this situation, but literature-wise, it is not even on the same level.
